ROGUE RIDDLE 1053: FIRST UPDATE AND HINTS

Adam Engel

Shalomies, homies!

Twas a quiet first day. I assume the darkness of early winter is getting to you all. Looking forward to seeing your guesses! A few hints below...

1. On the first night of Hanukkah, my mother gave to me… a new penpal from Mexico City whose Hebrew name would be Yoni.

(This is one of the ten most common name in Mexico)

2. On the second night of Hanukkah, my mother gave to me… another Mexican penpal with the same name.

(See question 1)

3. On the third night of Hanukkah, my mother gave to me… a newfound desire to make onomatopoeiatic owl and pig noises.

(When you get this, you will squeal with delight)

4. On the fourth night of Hanukkah, my mother gave to me… a statement from my Mexican penpal calling for changes to the dental insurance system.

(Same Mexican penpal as question 1)

5. On the fifth night of Hanukkah, my mother gave to me… a magic stick that can instantly rebuild bee homes that have fallen to the ground. The same stick can also treat a symptom of anaphylaxis for folks who have fallen to the ground. NOTE: The pun is the same here for both descriptions of the wand.

6. On the sixth night of Hanukkah, my mother gave to me… a WiFi network that lets me pleasure myself in unconventional, jazz-like ways. Pleasure myself euphemistically, of course.

7. On the seventh night of Hanukkah, my mother gave to me… a scratch-off lottery ticket? I got the top prize?! Oh, it's just a pair of pines and instructions on how to gather the right number of branches to start a fire… or something. Also, they addressed me by my middle name, which is weird. REMEMBER: There is a pattern to this week's Rogue Riddle. I'm counting on you to find the pattern.

Good luck, y'all. Send guesses directly to me at adotengel@....

Two additional quick notes:

1. I know this week will get challenging, so I gave you a couple hints for when you get started on number 5.
2. There is a pattern that should become evident once you complete a number of them. Frankly, I'm counting on it.

Much love,

Gary R with 12, and Adam EE the headliner with 13. Adam will
presumably take the stage sometime over the weekend.

This one was super fun, This theme really struck a chord and I especially enjoyed the lyrical banter. Thanks guys, really.

Stay tuned, no doubt, for an encore in the coming weeks. Lighters up. Or phones. Or whatever the kids do these days.

I haven’t been to a concert, of course, since the first week of March or so. One of the unexpected impacts of this quarantine thing is that my hearing has been returning. And I must say, I don’t like it. I hope that the Black Cat is saving my one foot of crushed in floor space by the stage right speaker bank. And, more importantly, that venues like that return, ultimately, better than ever.

Hear that? Let me answer it—

1. J.K.’s Harry Potter books are large and heavy—they are real Rowling’s Tomes.

2. I can’t get there because I have no talent, no money and my kids won’t let me. So in summary, what is the cause for my inability? The Cause Be Skills Cash & Young.

3. The father of psychiatry was known to get in touch with his feminine side, stereotypical clothing color wise. Call him Pink Freud.

4. Talk about togetherness. The star of Rocky and his siblings, kids and parents all got high a lot during their backyard barbeques. Come see Sly and the Family, Stoned.

5. The Benedictine was so mad at me that he forgot his vows and vandalized my property. I got the whole thing on my Ring cam though. Check out the YouTube clip and watch as the Monk Keys my car.

6. She couldn’t decide between her husband and her baseball fielding career. Whose side would she choose? Her Man’s, Her Mitt’s?

7. So the Flying Nun/Mrs. Doubtfire mom actress Sally asked me which coil she should polish to a high gloss.  (I get odd questions like this all the time.) It was the bottom one of course. So I said Buff a Low Spring, Field.

8. Soon after, no lesser a personage than Sir Paul asked if I would rather have one vehicle or a whole group of them. I said, a single vehicle would not suffice but a Fleet Would, Mac(ca).

9. I love animals and would never trod on one. I would never walk on FOX. I would never Step On Wolf.

10. Yeah, it’s good scotch. Hey Jim, pass me that bottle, not the JD, the one with the white label. Yeah, that one, The Dewers.

11. He got nicked for illegally selling British Schillings. That’s right, they got him for Bob Dealin’

12. In quarantine, Janet was a fan of different solitary activities. For example, she played jump rope on six occasions, Jacks on Five occasions, cards on four occasions, and is now ordering up some food.

13. I’ve been working in the coal mines, right here in the greater DC area, and I’m pretty dirty. Shortly, I’m going to immerse myself in hot water pretreated with a vanilla smelling fizzy bomb. I’m so sooty and Black, s’Bath is what I need.

Rogue Riddle 1052 ROCK AND ROLL STATUS UPDATE #RogueRiddle

Rogue Riddle 1052 ROCK AND ROLL STATUS UPDATE #RogueRiddle

gregg siegel

Speaking of a Dark Horse (That was quiet Beatle George right?), Hairy Son Adam, Eve ‘n Angels (Or do you prefer A damn even angle, if that’s a thing? I wish I had a cool punnable name. All I ever get are bird references, creatively equal in quality to “lettuce in, don’t you carrot all?”)…sorry, lost my twain of thought there…

So Adam, purveyor of all things rap punzaling has emerged nevertheless with a rock solid 10, tying Gary R. (different unsolved ones though) and edging out Lee (perhaps temporarilee) by just 1. However, Gary “I don’t really like rock and roll, I don’t know anything about rock and roll, I like Gilbert O’Sullivan, hey you kids get off my lawn” Hallock is still in the lead with 11.

One of you guys—or someone else entirely—sweep this s*** up by morning, would you?

Rogue Riddle 1052 ROCK AND ROLL #RogueRiddle

gregg siegel

OK, so this happened.

I love classic rock, but punk is where my heart lies. On Sunday night, after posting these classic rock puns, and wiping my punk rock puns off the page, the conflict evidently settled deep into my subconscious because no sooner did I enter the dream state later that night did I find myself in a pun competition, and I was assigned a mashup of, GET THIS, “60s bands and punk bands.”

Jeez, talk about text book Freudian (Jungian?) responses.

And, IN THE DREAM, I came up with “Nirvanailla Fudge.”

I once dreamed a joke that was formed verbatim right there, got it in Laughter The Best Medicine, didn’t have to change a word, but usually dream wisdom is gibberish. This was, well, pretty damn good.

So the lesson is clear. The next PunSlingers I will do fast asleep.

Since I am awake for the time being, I congratulate the top three contestants thus far, Gary H. in the lead and Gary R. and Lee J. tied for second. Still plenty of room for a sweep, and perhaps for a Dark Horse to enter the track by, let’s say, Thursday noon. And, if you know who the Dark Horse is, you should have no trouble with any classic rock conundrum.

Some clues added below.

1. J.K.’s Harry Potter books are large and heavy—they are real BAND NAME.

Ladies and Gentlemen…you should get this.

2. I can’t get there because I have no talent, no money and my kids won’t let me. So in summary, what is the cause for my inability? The BAND NAME.

Like a firm with three names. Then four. Then three. Four is right.

3. The father of psychiatry was known to get in touch with his feminine side, stereotypical clothing color wise. Call him BAND NAME.

Ugh. I feel dirty on this one. True pun cliché. They even made a Halloween costume out of it. Like a One Night Stand.

4. Talk about togetherness. The star of Rocky and his siblings, kids and parents all got high a lot during their backyard barbeques. Come see BAND NAME.

What is the shortened version of the actor’s name?

Whether your primary musical cup of meat is Guy Lombardo, Lil’ Anything or the thundering downstrokes of punk rock, I have to figure that every one has heard the great Rock and Roll Hall of Fame level Golden Age classic rock bands blasting out of a car radio once or twice.

If you need a refresher, google best classic rock bands or rock hall bands—they’re all there.

I found that these band names make for some beautiful, complex intriguing puns, and, like all puns, they are just disassembled and re-engineered phonemes, so whether or not one is overtly familiar with the original cues, it doesn’t really matter too much.

Which reminds me, if you’re lucky enough to have some spare funds after meeting your basic Maslows, consider supporting your local venues through any of the mechanisms available. It would be nice to have places to go for live music again one day.

Bands are the name, although with or without the article (The/A) if there is one. Individual artists can be full name or last name only. All are replaced in the clue with BAND NAME regardless of being a performer, group or band.

1. J.K.’s Harry Potter books are large and heavy—they are real BAND NAME.

2. I can’t get there because I have no talent, no money and my kids won’t let me. So in summary, what is the cause for my inability? The BAND NAME.

3. The father of psychiatry was known to get in touch with his feminine side, stereotypical clothing color wise. Call him BAND NAME.

4. Talk about togetherness. The star of Rocky and his siblings, kids and parents all got high a lot during their backyard barbeques. Come see BAND NAME.

RogueRiddle #1051 (BINGO & Reveal)

gary hallock

Lotsa activity in Riddle Land this week. We had 6 players in the game with numerous second, third and 4th volleys. With everyone using their own version of a “worksheet” it kept me kind busy tracking, counting and responding. I ended up nearly forgetting to announce the BINGO.

So, here we go now. My players this week (in order of their kill counts) were Gregg, Lars, Gary R., Erika, Jim & Marilyn. As you can see, Gregg Siegel topped the player list with the only clean sweep. Gregg will host RR #1052 this weekend.

Thanks to all who participated and even to those who only contemplate the notion of almost thinking about submitting a worksheet. You’re all winners this time around because it means you get to see what my preferred answers were. Revealed below integrated into the list.

The theme, in case it was too subtle to catch, was “PREPOSITIONS.”

In the spirit of excessive giving, here you will find yet another baker's dozen riddles to tickle and torture you. These are all brief and succinct and all built on a common theme. Once you solve a few, I believe the theme will become glaringly obvious, thus I am not even going to hint at it here. I will only say this much. It is not at all seasonal, timely or political. It’s just based on something I learned long ago from my grammar. (Oops! Maybe that was a hint.)

As usual, the player killing all (or most) will claim the right to host #1052 next week. You may still play without risk of claiming, so please don’t let that be a barrier to your enthusiastic participation. For most of us it’s all about the pun-fun. No deadline, no pressure, just pleasure.
